Day 9 Guarding Our Speech: The Importance of Controlling the Tongue and Temper in Ramadan

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh!

As we progress through the blessed month of Ramadan, we strive to purify not only our bodies but also our hearts and minds. Today, on the ninth day, let’s focus on the significance of controlling our tongue and temper, a crucial aspect of our spiritual development during this holy month.

The Power of the Tongue

The tongue is a powerful tool. It can be used to spread kindness, inspire good, and utter words of worship. However, it can also be used to hurt, gossip, and spread negativity.

Controlling the Tongue in Ramadan:

  • Mindful Speech: Be conscious of the words you speak, ensuring they are truthful, kind, and beneficial.
  • Avoiding Backbiting and Gossip: Refrain from speaking ill of others or spreading rumors.
  • Speaking Good or Remaining Silent: The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
  • Using the Tongue for Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah): Engage in the remembrance of Allah through reciting Quran, supplications, and praising Him.

Controlling the Temper

Fasting can sometimes make us more irritable or short-tempered. However, Ramadan is a time to practice patience and self-control.

Managing Anger in Ramadan:

  • Recognize Triggers: Identify situations or people that tend to provoke anger.
  • Practice Patience: When faced with anger-inducing situations, take deep breaths and try to remain calm.
  • Seek Refuge in Allah: Recite “A’udhu billahi minash shaitanir rajim” (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan) when feeling angry.
  • Walk Away: If you feel your anger escalating, remove yourself from the situation temporarily.
  • Remember the Rewards of Patience: Remind yourself that controlling your anger is a form of worship and brings great rewards from Allah.

The Benefits of Controlling the Tongue and Temper:

  • Spiritual Purification: Controlling our speech and anger purifies our hearts and brings us closer to Allah.
  • Stronger Relationships: Mindful speech and a calm demeanor foster healthy relationships with others.
  • Inner Peace: Controlling our reactions brings tranquility to our minds and hearts.
  • Increased Rewards: Allah (SWT) rewards those who strive to control their tongue and temper.

Let’s Strive for Self-Improvement

This Ramadan, let’s make a conscious effort to guard our speech and control our temper. May Allah (SWT) grant us the strength to overcome our weaknesses and purify our hearts.
